Use Study Apps

  • BeFocused – For me one of the hardest parts about studying is staying off social media! I love using BeFocused because it helps me stay on track. The app allows you to set timers & goals to achieve whatever you want! You can find the free version of the app, HERE! After I am done studying a subject for about and hour or two I will reward myself with social media time. Having total self-control is one of the hardest things to do, but once you achieve it you will be surprised with how many things you can achieve!

Color Coding & Powerpoint Making

  • Colored Pencils –  This may seem very middle school but it really helps! I love going back through my notes with colored pencils. This helps me review the information in a fun way. I used to use highlighters but they bleed through the paper so bad and limit the fun. 😛
  • PowerPoints – I love to make a powerpoint with my notes then go over them with a peer. One of the best ways to learn material is to teach it. It also allows you to have fun with it!

Focus & Relax

  • Essential Oils are a great way to focus and relax. If you are struggling to focus, try the Focus recipe in your diffuser or with a carrier oil (like coconut oil). If you are overly stressed try the Stress Free recipe! You can also buy roller bottles and apply it before your final. I’ll also share with you some of my must haves below!
    • FOCUS Recipe:
      • 5 drops of Lavender
      • 3 drops of Lemon
      • 3 drops of Rosemary
    • STRESS FREE Recipe:
      • 5 drops orange
      • 3 drops frankincense
      • 2 drops Cedar wood
    • Face Masks – While studying I like to put on a face mask to help me relax. It also makes me feel extra productive, as I am helping my skin and studying. They are super easy to make, check out some of my recipes HERE! When I am not making my own, I love to use Lush’s face masks! The ones above are from an Italian Lush! (hint the Italian, lol.) Cupcake is my favorite, but since it is a fresh mask, they are out of it most of the time. I make a similar one HERE! 🙂

Stay Healthy

  • Drinking Water – It can be easy to forget to drink water when you are stressed. A way to combat dehydration during finals is to be sure to take a bottle or two to the library with you. If you are one of those people who hate drinking water try infusing it with fruit! Check out some of my favorite recipes below!
    • Basic Spa Water:
      • Lemon Slices
      • Mint
      • Cucumber
      • Water
    • Fresh Water:
      • Strawberries
      • Lemon
      • Basil
      • Water
    • Tropical Lover Water:
      • Watermelon
      • Kiwi
      • Strawberries
      • Water
  • Eating Healthy – When you’re busy it can be super tempting to grab fast food. Try to avoid that by setting out healthy snacks on your desk, like celery and peanut butter or Nutella and strawberries. Make sure you are also getting fulfilling meals that are good for you. If you have no choice but fast food try and pick the healthiest option. Meal prepping is also another great way to keep up on eating healthy!
  • Beauty Sleep – All nighters might not be your best option! Getting at least 8 hours helps your brain recharge and helps you retain information. Go to sleep!

Tis the Season of Giving

In a world full of materialistic wants we tend to forget what this season is truly about. Growing up we were always taught; its not what you get for Christmas, its what you give. One of my favorite childhood memories is helping my mom shop for our “adopted” family at Christmas. Giving fulfilled me, the best gift I received was the ablilty to give. For every share I recieve on Facebook I will donate .25 cents to the listed charities, up to $100 dollars! In no certain order here are 10 amazing charities to give to this season!

1.) Resilience Project Inc.

Resilience is an emerging sock company started by a young man, Jacob, whom is  currently fighting Refractory Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. For every purchase of Resilience socks, half of the proceeds go to helping a chronically ill cancer patient pay for treatment. You can buy socks or donate HERE! Check out the incredibly moving video below: [embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74gdR9qPQdo[/embedyt]

2.) Humane Society of the United States

The Humane Society of the United States helps save over 76,000 animal lives every year. You can donate monthly or you can donate just one dollar today, for giving Tuesday. They also have many other ways help fight the cause! Check out their website HERE!

3.) Save the Children

We often take for granted the amazing lives we have by simply having a job, school and food on the table. With Save the Children you can sponsor a child in need from the United States or abroad. Your donation will help give them education and basic health benefits. You can even communicate with the child you sponsor. Help sponsor a child in need HERE!

4.) Smithsonian

To bring awareness to history and to help keep cultures respected, it is vital to teach history to our younger generations. The Smithsonian is the worlds largest museum complex, it has many different locations. Your donation helps keep the entrance to these museums free! Donate to the Smithsonian HERE!

5.) Charity: Water

Charity water uses 100% of public donations to help give access to clean water for over 800 million people in the world. Water is a vital resource for living and access to fresh water should never be denied. Donate HERE to help a human in need.

6.) LitWorld

LitWorld is a program to help the nearly 250 million illiterate people in the world learn to read and write. LitWorld believes that no one should be denied the right to be able to read and write. Donate to LitWorld HERE! You can check out their amazing video below: [embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toYukJwDbq8[/embedyt]

7.) The Salvation Army – Adopt-a-Family

The Salvation Army is an amazing charity to adopt-a-family through. If you are unfamiliar with how Adopt-a-Family works, you simply receive a “family” and shop for them for Christmas. It’s very fun and truly rewarding. If you live in Arizona check it out HERE!

8.) Girl Up

Girl Up is apart of the United Nations Foundation. It strives to help girls all over the world in education and women’s rights. Click HERE to donate to Girl Up!

9.) The Harry Potter Alliance

Harry Potter fan? The HP Alliance helps Harry Potter fans become heros! Their work is to help improve equality, human rights and literacy. To donate or become apart of the movement click HERE!

10.) EarthJustice

EarthJustice is a non-profit organization that helps advocate for a clean and healthy earth. Some of their most recent donations have gone to help fight the Dakota Access Pipe Line (DAPL). To donate to EarthJustice click HERE!

Giving Locally:

  • Food Banks
  • Volunteer at Homeless Shelters
  • Volunteer at Animal Shelters
  • Use VolunteerMatch.org to find volunteer opportunities near you!
  • Ask a childcare/preschool facility near you if you can anonomously pay for a week/month of child’s care for a family in need.
  • Donating food/clothing store gift cards to homeless. (So, they will be able to only purchase food or clothes)
Please consider giving this holiday season!

So you don’t know what to gift

Its that time of year again, tis the season of giving and love! Shopping for the kids in your life is always so simple. Mostly, due to the fact because they literally write lists of what they want. But, so many people don’t have a single clue of what they will give the people closest to them (ex. boyfriends, girlfriends, moms & dads…)! If you’re in this boat, don’t worry, I got your back no matter what your budget.

For Her.

$25 & under

$50 & under

$100 & under

For Him.

$100 & under

For Mom.

For Dad.

I recently went the lightest blonde I have ever been. No, it wasn’t all in one session. When they told me lightening my hair would take a while I didn’t realize it would take this long and my hair isn’t even as light as I originally wanted it to be. Going blonde takes time. I mean, look at Khloe Kardashian. How long as she been working on blonde? She is finally really, really blonde after what seemed like 78,759,823 years of lightening. I know what you’re thinking…“But, what about Kim after North?” and “What about what Kylie just did for NYFW?” Well…I’ll get to that.

My hair is naturally extremely dark brown and baby thin (Yes, I know. I STILL bleached it…) I was the girl that had the same hair because my mom wouldn’t let me touch my hair with product until I was 16. Thanks Mom! Seriously, THANK YOU! Looking back I’m glad I don’t have a strip of blue hair in my 6th grade school picture. Surprisingly you were right again and did live without it. When I was a senior in high school I finally decided I wanted to try something new. So, I did a baby, BABY ombre. It was barely any bleach and it basically looked like I had highlighted the ends. This is what I wanted. It was blended and still looked natural. I was terrified of my hair looking like it was “dipped” in a bucket of bleach. Although, I did notice the effects of bleach to my hair and I was back to the dark side by the time fall came around.

Now, I’m a grown up. JK. Who am I kidding? I’m a junior in college this time.  I don’t know what made me want try blonde again but, this time I was determined to go as light as I could. I wanted to be really, really blonde. This is what I’ve learned about the process and what you need to know if you’re thinking about going to the lighter side.

  1. Your hair will die. It will seriously be dead and like all things dead you won’t be able to bring it back to life.
  2. Know you will have to cut some off. I started this process with about six inches more hair. Take a biotin vitamin to help your hair grow faster and healthier.
  3. If your hairstylist doesn’t use Olaplex, find a new hairstylist. Olaplex is why Kim can go from black to Platinum in a couple sessions without being bald. Don’t get me wrong it’s still dead, just less dead and still intact in her head. Kylie’s hair is usually a wig. A super expensive wig.
  4. Find a great purple shampoo. I had color-treated hair before I started going blonde. This and the fact that I have really dark hair made hair super brassy and have an orange hue. Most people don’t like this, so purple shampoo will help tone it down to the cool blonde most want. I use Shimmer Lights and Lush’s Dorian Gray. I don’t use purple shampoo everyday. I use Obliphicas’ Seaberry Shampoo on the daily. 😉
  5. Your hair will need special treatment. Once I am out of the shower I apply Moroccan Oil. It’s one of my favorite hair products in the world! It’s an investment but it’s amazing and will last you a long time. I also have a newfound love for Lush’s Damaged Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment! It will also make a world of difference if you use less heat on your hair!

Enjoy the blonde!

Its so crazy that a week from now we will be in New York then headed out for our year in Milan. We will be taking SO many pictures so I decided to do a post on the types of cameras we will be taking with us. I will also mention the type of lenses and bag we use.

IMG_0120Canon Rebel T2i

We use two DSLR cameras. The first is my very first camera that I have used since about 2009. It is a Canon T2i. We don’t really use it unless Braxton and I both take a camera out. If you are just starting out the Canon Rebels are great! They still take really amazing pictures. In fact, I personally think if you are starting on a budget you should buy a camera like the Canon Rebel (I think they are on the T6) and invest into lenses. I use a 50mm 1.8 in most of my pictures. This will give you a nice blurry background. I also use a 24mm lens to get a wider angle. If you need a reference on how lenses work check this out.

IMG_9682Canon EOS 70D

I invested in the 70D for the purpose of videos. It has automatic focus while in video and I love it. It works amazing for Youtube. This is the camera that most Youtubers use. If you are serious about Youtube, its a great investment. Canon also released the 80D which is the newest model for the 70D. This is a great review video for the 70D. I found it does the best job for me.

IMG_0118GoPro Hero4 Silver

The GoPro is really nice to have if we are just going on a hike or anywhere around water. It so easy and tiny, it makes getting video in action super easy. We have a selfie stick and a chest strap that are excited to use. If you do anything super active or wet this is a great camera to have.

Vlogging/Video Diary Camera:

This camera is our latest purchase and we are so stoked to use it! We were on the market for a vlogging camera because after we tried to use our 70D for vlogging we realized how bad we needed a stabilizer. If you have ever bought a DSLR stabilizer you probably know how expensive they can be ($500 to $98474156868345), this was a lot for us for an accessory. My dad is into drones and has a few of his own Phantoms which are made by DJI. He surprised us with the DJI OSMO which uses the same stabilization technology as the Phantoms. Its amazing, the only thing I would recommend is buying a great mic because the built-in mic is worthless. But seriously, it is an amazing camera. Check it out here.

IMG_0126FUJIFILM Instax Mini 7S

Ok, I have no real use for the Polaroid except that I can take cute/hipster pictures then take a photo of it and post it on Instagram. This is my cheapest camera coming in at $60. Buy one here.

P.S. The camera is cheap but the film is ridiculously expensive. (Don’t say I didn’t warn you!)

IMG_9685iPhone 6 Plus S

I take a lot of photos with my iPhone so I thought it was only fair to add it in this post. iPhones are great. If you are looking into starting a blog and you have a great cell phone camera, don’t wait till you save enough for a DSLR. You can take amazing photos with an iPhone or other smartphone.

Sorry I didn’t take a photo of my bag but this is it! I love it so much! It is a great price and quality.

I’ll update this post if we add anything else to our bag!

Obviously, I have been super MIA lately… trust me I can explain. For the last couple months I have been dealing with chronic personal pain. It has been awful. I truly have gained insight and compassion for people who live with chronic pain. Pain is not only physical but after awhile it becomes mental. After awhile I began living with fear that I would always been in so much pain, that I would have to keep building my life around it. I was in a terrible place and I felt so bad for not being able to do things with my friends, family and especially Braxton. It really made me worry about our trip, I was not about to be on the other side of the world in pain for a year. I didn’t give up and after a few hospital visits and a couple doctors I finally found out the problem and will be having surgery soon! 🙂 I am so nervous but will be happy when its over with! I thought about sharing my problem but it is very personal and is extremely rare and it wouldn’t be relatable, I need this tiny piece of my personal life because I am such an open book. haha. I’ll finish this serious note by saying with this, if you suffer from chronic pain don’t give up.

Now, for the exciting things in life. I STARTED A YOUTUBE CHANNEL! Wait, what? Yes, I know. If you told me that while I was in highschool or even last year I probably would have laughed. Since I got sick I have been home so much & 3 hours from my cameraman (Brax) which has made blog photos basically impossible. We both really wanted to start travel vlogs (a video blog) once we go abroad so I figured why not test my camera and editing skills since I have nothing else to do. I enjoyed making the video, it was so much fun but I must say I am really excited to start making videos abroad!

I’ll link my video down below! Check it out and maybe learn a thing or two!

IMG_9744^^^ Bath time essentials, I got the candle at Sprouts

IMG_9755DIY Milk Bath ELizabeth AShleDIY Milk Bath ELizabeth AShle

Milk baths are commonly used by pregnant women and newborn baths because they are so mild. There are SO many recipes and I feel like I have tried so many but I eventually used them as inspiration and developed what I think works best. I LOVE this milk bath because it makes the water so soft and (I may be crazy but..) I feel like my skin is glowing. After I get out of a milk bath I feel like the moisture is literally locked into my skin. I also am obsessed with taking baths so I go crazy with the candles and flowers (sorry not sorry).

Here is my recipe:

  • 4 cups of whole milk
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 1 cup of powdered milk
  • 1 cup of epsom salt (I use the lavender scented one)
  • 4 tablespoons of honey
  • 5-6 drops of essential oil (I used this one) or vanilla extract

*whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl before you add to the bath because the powered milk with clump up.*

P.S. Sorry theres not many pictures I was sorta freaking out holding my camera in the bathtub!

MOTHER’S DAY IS COMING!!! I was so tempted to name this post “A Starving Student’s Guide to Mother’s Day” because thats basically what it is since I’m always on a budget! So I decided to share some tips on how to give Mom something she’d love without breaking the bank! So, lets skip the flowers and (store-bought) card this year. 🙂

1.) Lush/Bath Bombs

Mothers day Bath bombs Elizabeth Ashley

When I was younger my mom would always escape from us by taking a bath. So this is always a great gift to the stressed out mom who needs a break. These range from about $5 to $10 dollars. Grab her one or two and she’ll love it! If you have a bigger budget, think about getting her a Lush Gift Basket!

2.) Bath & Body Works CANDLES

mothers day gift guide elizabeth ashley

THESE ARE ON SALE FOR 12.50 TILL MIDNIGHT TONIGHT! Bath & Body Works have amazing candles! They are usually $22.50 so try to get them on this sale! They will go perfectly with that bath bomb. 😉

3.) As You Wish or other custom pottery studios

Mothers day Gift Guide

Channel your inner three year-old at As You Wish Pottery. We only have these in Arizona but, there are a lot of similar places in most big cities. A few months ago I went in and painted my Mom & Dad coffee cups. At As You Wish you grab a ceramic piece you like, paint it and pick it up a few days later after it has been glazed and fired. It is such a custom and personal piece that no matter your skill level, your mom will love it.

4.) Pandora Rings

pandora ringsPandora rings are in right now and they are so beautiful. They start at $25 and go up from there. They are also stackable if you wanted to team up with a sibling or buy two!

5.) Teavana or Starbucks gift card in a handmade card

Mothers Day gift Guide

Chances are your Mom drinks coffee or tea. If you don’t know what she prefers go with a Starbucks gift card because they now serve Teavana tea! Make this gift more special by making her a handmade card. Michaels and Hobby Lobby have everything you need to help make your mom the best handmade card. If you’re not into that, put they gift card into a Starbucks Tumblr and put a bow on it!

6.) Spa Day

Mothers day gift Guide

If you can afford it treat your mom to a mani/pedi or massage gift certificate to the local spa. If not, bring the spa to her! Give her a mani/pedi and massage yourself. Stop by a health food store and grab some relaxing essential oils and play a nice pandora station. Your mom will be grateful and the best part is IT’S FREE. 🙂

7.) Coupon Book

Handmade coupon books

I found this idea here, on Hoosier Handmade. They are such a sweet idea. If you are helping your child make these for your wife or a friend who is a Mom, they are especially perfect because kids they really feel like they have a part in Mom’s gift.

8.) Wine

Mothers day Gift Guide

If your mom is anything like my mom, she likes wine. Grab your mom a nice bottle of wine to go with Mother’s Day Dinner. If you aren’t 21 yet pick her up some new wine glasses! If you’re on a budget try a thrift store or antique shop, usually they have even cooler stuff anyways!

9.) Restaurant Gift Card

Mothers day gift guide

Give the gift of date night! Let your parents have a night on the town with a gift card to a nice restaurant for Mother’s Day.

10.) A Puppymother day gift guide

It is statistically proven that Mom’s really only love puppies on days that end in “y”. Do your family a favor and get Mom a cute puppy this Mother’s Day. JUST KIDDING. I mean unless she really wanted one, then you’d probably become the new favorite child.

Planning help elizabeth ashley Planning help elizabeth ashley Planning help elizabeth ashley Planning help elizabeth ashleyPlanning help elizabeth ashley Planning help elizabeth ashley

I honestly don’t know what I’d do with my life if I didn’t use a planner. It wasn’t until college that I realized how much planners can do! That being said, I’ve learned SO much about the different types and all of the secret hacks you need to know to know to get the most out of your planner and out of life!

PSA: Most planners are sold at the beginning of the year (January) or school year (August), if you click on the links thats why they aren’t being sold as of now. 🙂

The planner pictured above is by Erin Condren. She is literally a creative, planning genius/goddess! Her videos were so helpful in learning all of the little things you can do with your planner! One thing I loved about her planners is that you can personalize them, the front is my name (obvi) and a quote that I picked out! Her website said I would get my planner within 6 weeks because it was so busy but it came in 4 DAYS! The packaging is also amazing! The best thing is that you can change out your cover if you get tired of it! Her planners also come with stickers in the back, some are blank & others say doctors appointment, mani/pedi, etc. I used these every month on my monthly calendar. If I have a really busy day in the month I will use the day-to-day section in my planner. I like that her day-to-day is broken up in morning, afternoon and nighttime. When buying your Erin Condren you’ll also have two layout options, horizontal or vertical, I choose horizontal. Personally the horizontal was just more appealing to my eye, so pick what works for you! To keep it extra organized and still cute, use colored pens! I got these cheap ones from staples and they work great. I like to plan a date at the end of the month to plan the next month. Those dates usually consist of chips and guac at Chipotle but for special occasions we go to Sugar Bowl. 🙂

This year I am obsessed with Erin Condren but I am also a huge fan of Lilly Pulitzer planners! Last year I used Lilly Pulitzer and really liked the cute style of them although I found that they don’t have as many helpful stickers and things as Erin Condren. If you don’t need all those bells and whistles and like her style I’d definitely go with Lilly!

Next year, I will try out The Happy Planner! I have read so many great things about this planner. I love that they are bright and colorful like the Erin Condren Planners. They also have those bells and whistles I like. If you are more minimal, simplistic and kind of like that edgy look, try these. Ferme A  Papier has such beautiful modern designs.

Do everything on your phone and don’t like old fashion paper? Theres still hope for you! If you have an iPhone or Macbook you’re probably familiar with iCal. Its amazing and if you have more than one Apple Product it syncs to all of your devices, God bless modern technology. Another app I love to use is Evernote, the basic package is free. If you are a hardcore planner, think about investing once you try out the basic. Evernote has amazing reviews and visuals.

Happy planning 🙂
